Peyronie’s disease can be a bit difficult to diagnose but you wouldn’t be reading this article if you didn’t strongly suspect or already know that you may have this strictly male problem. While it can affect middle-aged and older men, younger men are not immune to Peyronie’s. Genetics does seem to increase the likelihood you can get it but knowing if your dad or grandfather had this problem is not very likely due to the sensitive nature of the disease.
Doctors are not in total agreement as to the cause of Peyronie’s disease, the general consensus is that the first stages develop after an injury to the male genitals. The injury does not even have to have been severe. It is then thought that tearing of tissue along with minor internal bleeding within certain tissue layers causes scarring. Then the injured area can become worse with a thickening, plaque buildup, or a type of local fibrosis in which the tissues harden.
Quick Shot Info: Peyronie’s is not very common and only will affect about 1-3 men out of 100. If you do have Peyronie’s this is little comfort to know that you were that unlucky.
Injury to the genital area does not explain other actions that occur, which makes it problematic to say for certain that its injuries that will bring on a bout of Peyronie’s.
Duration and progress of Peyronie’s will vary greatly between men leading some doctors to suggest a cautious approach and may suggest waiting 1 or 2 years before recommending surgery. Some men that have Peyronie’s disease will seem to clear or heal after a period of time, but that can also mean having to put up with Peyronie’s for years and that can take quite a psychological toll on you.
Fast Fact: An interesting fact about Peyronie’s disease is around one-third of men will also develop a thickening or hardening of tissues in the feet and or hands.
Confusing symptoms can make Peyronie’s disease difficult to self-diagnose. Some men never experience pain, others have extreme pain while other men only have pain during an erection. The plaque or hardened scar tissue easily can vary in degrees of hardness, size and placement. Peyronies only affects men and can affect any race though it is more prevalent in Caucasian males.
Certainly some men with Peyronie’s will have to deal with physical pain but certainly almost all will have to deal with the psychological aspects of the assault on their manhood. Peyronie’s can have debilitating affects on relationships and marriages as the man suffers with the mental strain. Psychological counseling is often suggested or at the very least trying to talk openly with a partner is a very necessary step in attempting to deal with the problem.
Quick Shot Info: Peyronie’s is most likely to occur between the ages of 45 and 60. A real “mid-life crisis”.
