There is no doubt about it - there are great benefits, both physically and emotionally, to be had from losing weight. Though losing weight is not an easy task, the long term effects brought by it would certainly improve anyone’s life after shedding those unwanted and unhealthy pounds.
Here you can see a number of different ways that being overweight can affect your body:
Being overweight makes you much more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, strokes or heart disease.
These alone make up three very good reasons to get that excess weight off. It has been shown by research from across the USA and the UK, that the most prevalent cause of high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes are caused by problems directly associated with obesity. Being overweight can mean that the level of fat being carried around your body in your blood can be massively increased. The fat gets deposited and can cause clogging of the major arteries of the body, including the heart and brain. This in turn can bring on heart attacks and strokes.
Unfortunately, you may have problems that you are unaware of, and sudden death from stroke or heart attack can strike without warning.
If you can manage to decrease your overall weight, even by as little as 5 to 10 percent, your chances of having heart disease, strokes or long-term raised blood pressure will also be dramatically reduced. Your life expectancy will increase, and that has to be good news to anyone!
Diabetes can be caused by being overweight.
Although it is a common disease, diabetes should not be taken lightly. There are many far reaching problems throughout the body that are caused by this illness. Being overweight can lead to type one or type two diabetes.
To those who already have diabetes, getting some regular exercise and losing some of that excess weight could help in controlling your blood sugar levels, as well as continuing with the medication you may be currently taking.
Do a little more exercise each day. Even just going for a steady walk (or run if you are a little fitter) will help your fitness levels improve, but please do build up slowly. When you get that blood pumping it will help you to burn of those unwanted pounds.
Weight loss helps reduce your risk for cancer.
Being overweight is linked with various kinds of cancer, particularly for women. The most common types of cancers that are associated with being overweight include cancer of the uterus, ovary, breast, colon and gallbladder. This is not meant to scare you, but this information is a medically proven fact and, as such, should not be taken lightly.
Men are also at risk from developing cancer if they are overweight. These cancers include cancer of the colon, prostate and rectum.
Sleep apnoea can be improved with weight loss.
Sleep apnoea is a condition where you can temporarily stop breathing during the night and then continue to snore heavily. The condition can cause drowsiness or sleepiness during the day and, because of being overweight, can eventually result in heart failure. Shedding those excess pounds can help in eliminating this problem too.
Reduce your weight, reduce your pain from osteoarthritis.
The joints in your body cannot function forever, and if you are overweight then you are putting far too great a load on them. Your lower back, hips and knees all take up the strain of extra weight and increase the likelihood of having very painful osteoarthritis in the future. If you are already suffering, try to lose some weight now and you will soon see that your pain level is improving.
Before you read this article, I am certain that you knew already that it is not easy to lose weight. Hopefully you now have the information that shows just how important it is, both in terms of quality of life and quantity of life to get that excess weight off, and enjoy life, whatever your age.
