What is an affiliate? It is a person or an organization or an establishment that is connected to another as a subordinate, a member or a subsidiary.

For internet marketing purposes an affiliate is a sales rep for a bigger organization. When an affiliate generates a sale they get a percentage of the price of what they sell from a larger organization. The affiliate is the one who lures the customer in and gains their interest so that the customer will buy something.

To be successful in affiliate marketing there are a number of strategies that can be used. One can use article marketing where one can get his name spread about by distributing articles to article directories. For this you need good content. There are advertising forums, PayPerClick campaigns and others all directed at getting clients to a site so they can purchase what they are looking for.

It all does not happen by accident but by knowing the tools and how they work to drive traffic to a site. You as an affiliate do not have to present your own product but are a sales rep for someone elses product or service. If you can make a go of it through affiliate programs and make a significant income, then your are cutting out a lot of the headaches that one who runs business has to deal with on a routine basis. You are not responsible for the product itself, do not have to repair it, you do not have employees and do not have to pay payroll, handle customer complaints or pay for an office or storage facility. It could be considered ideal again if you can generate income.

You need to know how to drive traffic to a site. It used to be that you needed a website to do this but it is now possible to do this by other means such as blogs or articles. Find a good article membership site and get your article content from them.

One should know about search engines and their optimization, PayPerClick, RSS feeds, blogs and email marketing as well. This type of activity really only started in 1998 and is always changing and progressing so it is best to keep abreast of how it is evolving. Affiliate marketing has become more refined and there are more rules and regulations today than at the beginning.

What is a good affiliate program? Probably simply one that one is able to make money with. Large companies that have affiliate programs generally offer a lower commission percentage such as 10 to 15 percent. You can however find affiliate programs that will offer you 50 to 60 percent commission to give you more of an incentive to go with that affiliate program. Know your stuff and good luck to you.
